Tanks have played a vital role in military history since their invention. Since then different countries have tried to come up with the most protected, the most powerful, and the most war machines the world has ever seen. Some tanks are entirely new designs while others are improved versions of battle-tested hardware. There’s a big debate over which country has the most powerful tank, and we put together a list for you to consider. T-14 Armata – This is a new generation Russian main battle tank, and has 3 separate hull compartments; the forward crew cab, an unmanned remote controlled turret in the center, and its engine compartment in the rear. 9. Type 99A2 – This Chinese main battle tank was developed beginning in 2003 and entered trials in 2007. It has a number of changes in terms of firepower, mobility, protection, and technology over the earlier Type 99 tanks. It has an improved 125mm smoothbore gun. 8. T-84 Oplot M – This new generation Ukrainian main battle tank was first revealed in 2008. This tank is fitted with Duplet built-in Explosive Reactive Armor which is a type of armor that uses multiple layers of high explosive sandwiched between the armor plates which offers a high level of protection against modern armor piercing ammunition. 7. Type 10 Hitomaru – The Japanese Type 10 Main Battle Tank is made by the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries company and is a 4th generation main battle tank. 6. Leopard 2A7+ – This German main battle tank is a new generation tank based on the Leopard 2 which was developed in the 1970’s for the West German Army. The Leopard 2A7+ is a further development of the 2A6 and has many technological advances and features enhanced protection and reconnaissance capabilities. It can operate in low-intensity conflicts and in high-intensity warfare. 5. T-90AM – This Russian Main Battle Tank is a deep modernization of the T-90S main battle tank and has advanced protection, mobility, and firepower. The tank utilizes the new ERA Relikt armor. The Relikt Explosive Reactive Armor is the most modern Russian ERA in widespread use and is claimed to be twice as effective as Kontakt-5. The tank also has a new automatic loader and an improved gun 4. Challenger 2 – This British main battle tank was developed to replace the previous Chieftain MBT in service with the British Army. It is the further development of the Challenger 1 and is significantly more capable than its predecessor. It is said to be one of the most protected tanks in the world and provides a very high level of protection against direct fire weapons. 3. K2 Black Panther – It is said that this is the weapon that North Korea fears the most. The South Korean main battle tank, the K2 Black Panther costs over $8.5 million dollars per unit because the tank has a lot of technological advancements. The K2 MBT is fitted with Composite Armor and Explosive Reactive Armor. 2. Merkava IV-M Windbreaker – The Israeli Merkava IV-M main battle tank is an example of a sophisticated weapon system designed to deal with very specific national requirements. Though similar in performance to the German Leopard 2 and American M1 Abrams the Merkava has many features not found in any other contemporary tank designs. 1. M1A2 SEP V3 – Classic American design which was first introduced in the 1980’s and which devastated Soviet-made Iraqi armor in the 1991 Gulf War without a single loss, the M1A2 Abrams is one of the most feared main battle tanks in the world.
