History: September 4 – On this day back in 1886 Apache chief Geronimo (‘one who yawns’ in Apache) surrenders to U.S. government troops

On September 4, 1886, after almost 30 years of raiding Mexican and white settlers and battling the U.S. Army, Apache war leader Geronimo finally surrendered in Arizona to U.S. Army General Nelson Miles.

Geronimo was born in 1829 or 1830 and he grew up in modern day Arizona and Mexico.  His tribe, the Chiricahua Apaches, clashed with white settlers who wanted to farm their land. In 1858, Geronimo’s family was murdered by Mexican troops. Enraged, Geronimo swore revenge against the Mexicans and the Americans. READ
