Chinese companies listed on U.S. stock exchanges have a combined market capitalization of over half a trillion dollars. But they don’t comply with American financial regulations, because Beijing restricts access to full audits. Congressional members on both sides of the aisle have demanded more transparency, and the Trump administration has made moves to stop U.S. pension funds from investing in Chinese firms. So where is the U.S.-China relationship headed? Will the U.S. decouple completely? And why does it look like the Chinese leadership is getting nervous about their ability to maintain power?
