The US House of Representatives has passed a bill to impose sanctions on Chinese officials over the crackdown on Uighur Muslims. More than a million Uighurs and other Muslim minorities are kept in what Beijing calls “re-education camps.” The legislation calls for an end to what it describes as “arbitrary detention, torture and harassment” of the minority community. China’s foreign ministry has criticized the bill as a “smear”. Beijing says the camps only provide vocational training.
