History: November 5 – On this day back in 1994 George Foreman becomes oldest heavyweight champ

Watch George Foreman make boxing history when he challenged Michael Moorer for the WBA and IBF World Heavyweight Championships at the ripe old age of 45. More info below… George Foreman was a boxing legend long before his fight with Michael Moorer. His 72-4 boxing record read like a who’s who in boxing from the past 25 years and included ring legends such as Joe Frazier, Mohammad Ali, Chuck Wepner, George Chuvalo, Ken Norton, Ron Lyle, Jimmy Young, Dwight Muhammad Qawi, Bert Cooper, Gerry Cooney, Evander Holyfield, Jimmy Ellis and most recently Tommy Morrison. He was a former WBC and WBA World Heavyweight champion having beaten Joe Frazier in 1973 before losing them to Muhammad Ali in one of the most famous fights in all of boxing, the Rumble in the Jungle in 1974. Following the loss to Ali, Foreman beat Ron Lyle to claim the vacant NABF Heavyweight title and defended it successfully in a rematch with Joe Frazier. In 1977 however he suffered an unexpected loss to Jimmy Young and retired from the sport. 10 years later, and about 40lbs heavier, Big George returned to the ring and quickly notched up 24 wins in a row over a 3 year period earning himself a world title shot against Evander Holyfield in 1991 but losing a 12 round decision. In 1993 he fought Tommy Morrison for the vacant WBO World title but lost another 12 round decision. Michael Moorer was undefeated at 35-0 and in his last outing won the WBA and IBF World Heavyweight titles by out pointing Evander Holyfield in a very close fight. Michael Moorer was considered one of the hardest hitting light heavyweights of all time and a former WBO World Light Heavyweight champion. He had KO’d all of his opponents as a light heavyweight but when he made the switch to full time heavyweight he appeared to lose some of the power he once possessed. Regardless, he went into this fight a 3-1 betting favorite. Moorer had dominated almost every round of the fight heading into the 10th. He was on his way to an easy decision win. It was at this moment however when one of the greatest moments in sport took place. Out of seemingly nowhere, Foreman landed an inconspicuous 1-2 combo flush on Moorer’s jaw that put him down and out. As Moorer was counted out, Foreman became the oldest boxer to win a World Heavyweight Championship at 45 years old, 21 years after he first won the title in 1973. He was the new holder of the WBA and IBF World Heavyweight belts. George Foreman would eventually be stripped of his WBA belt for refusing to face Tony Tucker, the WBA’s mandatory challenger. In 1995 he successfully defended his IBF title against Axel Schulz, winning the WBU (1995-2004) Heavyweight title in the process. Shortly following this fight, Foreman was stripped of the IBF title as well for refusing to give Schulz a rematch. Big George finally retired for good in 1997 following a controversial loss to Shannon Briggs ending his career with a 76(68)-5 record. Moorer would win back the vacant IBF title in 1996 by beating Axel Schulz but would lose it the following year in a rematch with Evander Holyfield. Moorer would never get another chance at a world title and in 2002 he suffered the worst defeat of his boxing career, being demolished by David Tua in just 30 seconds. Moorer retired in 2008 with a 52-4-1 record.
